That’s no moon—or wait, maybe it is?! Here at the Aquarium, we know Mola mola as “ocean sunfish,” but across the pond, molas moonlight as “moonfish” instead. Between the Apollo 11 anniversary and tonight’s full moon, now is the perfect time for sunfish lunatics to unite around these sealestial beings! 🌕🐟❤️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For those inquiring minds out there: 🇫🇷: poisson lune 🇪🇸: pez luna 🇮🇹: pesce luna 🇩🇪: Mondfisch 🇳🇱: maanvis 🇵🇹: peixe lua ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #montereybayaquarium #molamola #oceansunfish #asunfishbyanyothernamewouldsmellasfishy #stillnotatunajay #orababywhale
Well this video certainly tipped the scales of amazing polychaete worms! Pound for pound, we’d take scale worms over most others any day. We just had to weigh in with our ⚖️🐛❤️! Ok, scale puns aside, this week’s #MBARImondays is about all the work @mbari_news is doing for scale (worms)! ・・・ Imagine just about any habitat in the ocean—from the tiny spaces between sand grains to the vast open waters—and you'll find scale worms living there! Of the nearly 20,000 species of segmented worms known today, nearly 10 percent are scale worms. What makes this group of worms so successful? Researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History are on the hunt to find out. They are using remotely operated vehicles to explore the ocean's uncharted habitats where these beautiful worms thrive. Scale worms are easily recognized by the fleshy scales covering their backs and the hundreds of dazzling bristles below them. Scale worms dominate the deep sea not only in terms of species numbers but also in the variety of their shapes and sizes. Investigating their diverse forms and behaviors reveals the many ways this particular group of segmented worms has been able to thrive in so many challenging habitats, including the deep sea. #montereybayaquarium #mbari #deepsea #venividivermi #scalingup #theoceanisbristlingwithscaleworms
Whipping whorls of bewildering wonder welcome wanderers wishing to witness wilderness in wave-swept worlds. Near the piston that plunges into our Kelp Forest, the push and pull and periodic play of the water creates a perfect position for the prodigious productivity of giant kelp to be put on display, as previously microscopic and planktonic spores propel the plant to carpet the surface in a canopy populated with plentiful species—and opportunities for pretty pictures! #montereybayaquarium #algalalliterocean #captionsforkelpconnoiseurs #proseandcons
