Curiosity is currently performing experiments in an area named 'Clay-Bearing Unit'. The minerals of clay were detected in this region from orbit in 2012 via the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (#MRO). #Curiosity will hopefully confirm the presence of clay minerals as they are usually formed with water. On sol 5352 (12-Feb-2019), NASA's Opportunity Rover was 'retired' from service after not sending any receivable transmissions since sol 5111 (10-Jun-18). It landed at Meridiani Planum on 25-Jan-2004 and explored 28.06mi/45.16km during its 14 year, 46 day (Earth time) service period- ~55x its designed 90-sol lifetime. After exploring for the past year, Curiosity is leaving the 'Vera Rubin Ridge' area to continue climbing Mount Sharp (#AeolisMons). Using its accelerometers to detect small gravitational changes, #Curiosity has determined Mount Sharp is not as dense as originally thought. Curiosity recently announced the detection of organic molecules on Mars. Its Sample Analysis at Mars (#SAM) oven was used to heat (500'c/900'f+) and analyze mudstone samples from Gale Crater resulting in the detection. Taken by its Right-side 'B' #NavCam, Curiosity's high-gain antenna is in the foreground while the rim of Gale Crater frames the background of this photo of the rover's current rocky location. Curiosity is now at the southern edge of Vera Rubin Ridge (VRR) where it will conduct geological matching between VRR and clay deposits that lie to the south. Using the Mars Hand Lens Imager (#MAHLI) located at the end of the robotic arm, #Curiosity checks its RWEB window (the #ChemCam looks out of it) for dust. Curiosity continues to climb Mount Sharp (#AeolisMons) but stopped to image this rich powdery sand; which is welcome contrast to the sharp rocks it usually drives upon. Curiosity continues to investigate sand dune formations as it drives up the northwestern side of Mount Sharp (#AeolisMons). On one of these stops #Curiosity turned its camera back on itself to check its aluminum wheels. Approximately 16km/10mi have been driven on the rovers six wheels and this left-middle wheel shows the greatest amount of wear. It is estimated Curiosity has many more km/mi of drive potential and this wear is not too worrisome. Curiosity performed a number of science experiments upon the sand of an area named "Ogunquit Beach". This spherical and low to the ground image was taken by Curiosity's Right 'B' Front #HazCam on Sol 1659 (2017-04-06 16:00:15 UTC). #Curiosity then drove ~35m/114ft to the southwest to continue measuring the composition of bedrock as it continues its ascent of Mount Sharp (#AeolisMons). Curiosity looks beyond a sea of sand in this B/W image as it continues to climb Mount Sharp (#AeolisMons). While driving through an area known as "Old Soaker", #Curiosity identified 3 billion year old eroded mud cracks (aka 'desiccation cracks') giving weight to the theory Mars was once a wetter planet. This golf ball sized piece of iron-nickel meteorite was named "Egg Rock". These types of meteorites are quite common on Earth. If you look closely, you may be able to see the shiny grid patterns that Curiosity's #ChemCam instrument zapped into it with its laser for element confirmation. For the past month Curiosity has been in a region called "Murray Buttes" conducting experiments and a lot of driving. This region is characterized by its many sandstone geological features. It is believed the sandstone was deposited by winds after the lower layers of Mount Sharp (#AeolisMons) formed. Curiosity will now exit the scenic region and head higher up Mount Sharp.
