Harvard School of Dental Medicine

An alum of @HarvardDentalMed’s prosthodontics program and on-call dentist for @zoonewengland, Steven Spitz is dentist to some of the animal kingdom’s most exotic species. His patient Chessie, an 11-year old jaguar, is one of the largest cats and top predators in the western hemisphere, with teeth up to 100 millimeters long. In a two-hour procedure, Spitz and his team performed a root canal on Chessie’s damaged tooth.

A portrait of Alvin Poussaint, professor of psychiatry and former faculty associate dean for student affairs, was recently unveiled at Harvard Medical School. Poussaint retired in May after 50 years at the medical school. At HMS, he was instrumental in building a firm foundation for diversity and inclusion. Poussaint mentored many, showing by his life’s example what can be achieved despite formidable obstacles. His advice to students underrepresented in medicine remains unchanged. “The most important thing is, you let them know that they can overcome and that they shouldn’t quit. That they should keep their nose to the grindstone and keep on pursuing what they should be pursuing,” he said. “And that they have the talent to make it.”

Miao Xue was drawn to the study of psychology because she liked the idea that studying the mind would reveal important truths about the human condition. During her studies, Xue realized that mental health isn’t just about mental illness or an individual patient’s mind. It’s about an interlocking set of factors that includes biology, culture, politics, and social interactions. “If you only talk about the person as a patient, it’s too narrow a vision,” she says.⁣⁣ ⁣ A first-year student in the HMS Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery program, Xue is developing an intervention to promote the well-being of families in China, particularly for children who are living with parents with mental illness.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣

As a premed student in college, Irene Nyavor decided that she wanted to help keep people out of the hospital. Now, HMS Executive Education has given Nyavor and her colleagues an opportunity to ensure that technological innovations are designed to be as effective as possible for doctors and patients. Nyavor participated in a 5-day program that included classroom discussions and clinical immersions where business executives can gain firsthand knowledge of current challenges and opportunities in real-world health care delivery. “The better we understand health care, the more impact we can have,” says Nyavor.

Although she followed her love of sculpturing early in life, the turmoil in the world—the Arab Spring in 2010 and the Syrian crisis, for example—prompted Edith Gahleitner to redirect her talents. She turned to the study of medicine, and has focused her efforts on ways to provide contextually and culturally sensitive mental health care for people who have been displaced by conflict and have experienced violence. Now a first-year student in the HMS Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery program, Gahleitner plans to use a human-rights approach to investigate the intersection of psychiatry and child protection issues.

In this image, worm DNA glows in tiny rainbow clusters under a fluorescent microscope. Each sphere reveals the genetic material contained within the nucleus of a single cell. Each color illuminates one of the worm’s six chromosomes.⁣ ⁣ To capture this image, researchers expanded upon an imaging method called fluorescence in situ hybridization—FISH for short. Scientists can now study the 3D structure of the entire genome of Caenorhabditis elegans worms at all stages of their life cycle and at three different scales with significantly less time and cost. The tool promises to illuminate how genetic architecture affects and is affected by gene activity, cell specialization and other biological phenomena in different cell types over time.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣
