Whitechapel

Finally got the chance to see Michael Rakowitz's incredible show at the Whitechapel Gallery. Stretching over two floors, the exhibition heralds the Iraqi-American artist's ongoing commitment to using art as a method of highlighting and commemorating attacks on people and culture. Included in the exhibition is the recreation of Vladimir Tatlin's monument, built together with an Aboriginal community in Sydney out of materials taken from demolished Aboriginal houses. Also included is a multi-media work that considers the period in which The Beatles broke up and Gamal Abdel Nasser died-ending notions of Pan-Arabism. Rakowitz also pays tributes to destroyed works and persecuted peoples. This includes stone-carved books to commemorate the two book burnings suffered in Kassel: first by the Nazis and then in a bombing of a library by the British Air Force. Another pays tribute to the botanical motifs by Armenian artisans in Turkey, many of whom suffered persecution and exil in 1915. Finally, the artist dedicates a gallery as a life-size reconstruction of Room N of the Northwest Palace of Nimrud, destroyed in 2015 by ISIS. This is an amazing exhibition- not to be missed! On until August 25th 🔆

Last week Act IV Director @rebecca.kinglassman was out and about and went to the excellent exhibition at the @whitechapelgallery . It’s definitely an exhibition to see this summer. . ‘So much here is a poignant evocation of the precariousness of cultures. Yet there’s abundant poetry, too: Rakowitz underscores our ultimate common humanity.’ **** Evening Standard. . @evening.standard @whitechapelgallery #whitechapelgallery @michaelrakowitz
