So there's obviously a big difference between being sore from a workout and being in physical pain. If you can't tell the difference...???
If you're extremely sore (which you should be) than giving those muscles at least 2 days to recover is recommended to give them proper time to repair those torn muscles and get best results.
Physical pain can mean a few things.
1) you're lifting too heavy (yes, you can be lifting too heavy) and should work on building overall strength at lighter weight and take the process slower.
2) you have improper form which is causing the wrong parts of your body for that particular workout.

A lot of people will say that pin comes with lifting heavy and say that I'm wrong (fight me). When you're pushing your body through actual pain you put yourself at risk for obtaining more severe injuries and then putting yourself out of commission entirely. If your body cannot physically take the pressure of high weight training, work on lower weights gradually until it can.
You may even have bad joints and what not (don't use it as a crutch) which in that case you can do rehabilitation exercises to increase the strength for those joints so you don't have to be a big weenie about them crippling your fitness journey. You can gradually become stronger and more capable so, these things are doable!
