Anime review time for Kimi no Na wa!
If I suddenly showed up, would I bother him? Surprise him? There's no way we could meet. But what if we did? What should I do? Would I annoy him? Would it be awkward? Or maybe… he'd be a bit glad to see me?
- Mitsuha Miyamizu from Kimi no Na wa.
Hi, my name is @anime.key and I've always been late to parties. If it's not retardation overdose or ethically jarring reverse incest harem foot fetish anime, I always try to catch up to the most popular airing series of the season if possible. If it's like in this season's case though that I'm leaving Shingeki no Kyojin S2 to its fanbase-hype-train hybrid following of the living dead, I backtrack and try to view a popular anime from a previous season instead. So Kimi no na wa. it was, an anime movie from Summer 2016 that has since garnered immense international popularity... oh and cool, it's by Makoto Shinkai. I've followed almost all of his known works prior to Kimi no Na wa., from his early projects to his feature films to his animated commercials, yet I intentionally lowered my expectations for this movie, thinking it was mostly because of its broad international audience that it bagged all the good reception it received. Of course, I was wrong. It was actually pretty good ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. In fact, I strongly believe it's Shinkai's best one in terms of storytelling... but second best in terms of animation I guess, a close second to Kotonoha no Niwa. Nonetheless, the movie is an overall very stunning experience, to say the least.
I'm sure you've all heard the praise Kimi no Na wa. has been getting, from your friends, from your classmates, or from your local dental hygienist. Though there have been many who have been critical of the plot, I have yet to encounter anyone who says that they regret watching the film or that it was a waste of their time. Everyone had taken a part in making this film as wildly successful as it was and thanks to that, Kimi no Na wa. may forever be remembered as a gem of early 21st century anime.
Overall rating: Must-Watch: 5/5
I obviously didn't cover much of anything in detail, so expect a more definite review on this movie to be uploaded in the future.
