Every time you open a door in an older home renovation – you are never quite sure what you will find. As is often the case, we found more problems than we had initially bargained for – but there was one hidden treasure we did uncover during our demolition and assessment of our circa 1905 house. Restoring Your Historic House

Roofing is the first line of defense against the elements. It is also often a character defining feature of the house, such as this wonderful diamond-cut wood shingle Mansard roof on a Second Empire style farmhouse. Surviving wood shingled roofs are relatively rare and fortunately these homeowners have recently replaced the shingles on this elevation with new custom cut wood shingles to match the originals that remain on the other sides of the roof. The more rare a surviving feature, the more important it is to preserve or replicate it exactly. Roofing is covered in Chapter 11 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners which is now available for pre-order on Barnes & Noble and Amazon. Reserve your copy today! At the Philips Lighting Lab they have so many awesome lighting vignettes addressing everything from residential to retail to office environments. The demonstration I enjoyed most was a new installation in which a large textured wall was lit with a wide range of lighting techniques – so cool! @philips_lighting . . . #historicalhomes
