Check iwanderwithmycamera's Instagram From Finland I went home for a pit stop and then to Dunhuang the Silk Road town in northwestern China's Gansu province. Before the age of maritime discovery the main trade routes between Asia and Europe were on land; this frontier garrison town on the edge of the Gobi Desert was a key hub of the Silk Road. The proliferation and achievements of Buddhist art in this part of China are nothing short of stunning and one cannot visit Dunhuang without seeing at least some of the many grottoes decorated with religious murals and sculptures and dating anything from 1,000-1,500 years ago (some still remarkably well preserved in this arid climate). Most visitors to the Silk Road choose to go in summer or autumn but personally I think winter is the smarter choice - not only can you avoid the crowds you can also get much more out of the trip as grottoes normally closed to the public in the summer/ early autumn high season can be viewed in the low season. You should be properly attired for the climate of course but I thought minus 8-9 degrees Celsius temperatures were more than manageable and a small trade-off for what I got to see. #silkroad #sanddunes #desert #mingshashan #鸣沙山 #敦煌 #絲綢之路 #dunhuang #unesco #unescoheritage #gansu #china #wanderlust #travel #olympusomd #olympusomdem5 #olympusinspired #natgeo #natgeocreative #natgeotravel #ig_dunhuang ig_silkroad #ig_china 1454309908887649541_2652439817
