Hey all, in light of the oscars next week I will try and have all the nominated movies reviewed by Sunday. Anyway, just concluded the show Bloodline, and so ill do a quick review! The Netflix original has two seasons, launched a season 3, however it was recently cancelled. If you've endured the dragged out series, you'll understand that it's hardly a surprise. The show was needlessly lengthened, and parcelled into 13-episodes in season 1. although classified a crime/thriller, events of these natures were seldom occurring! The show is based on an intimate glance at the Rayburn's, a well respected, local family who own a prestigious Inn on the Florida Coast. Anyway, the plot is based on several mishaps, unfortunate sequences of events as well as the tumultuous backstabbing that occurs in the seemingly perfect family! So basically, it's a more extreme version of desperate housewives.
The performances were extremely varied and bring a new meaning to the term 'mixed bag'. I have loved Kyle Chandler since 'Friday Night Lights', yet after watching this I have realised that he is clearly limited to the unidimensional, responsible, authoritative character. Anyway, he strived in this role until tasked with adding a darker aspect in season 2, and he clearly struggled. Apart from that, of the main characters, only Mendelsohn had a redeemable performance. In fact I was most impressed with his portrayal of the sadistic, evil yet soft-spoken Rayburn. Before moving on I need to highlight two major issues I had with the acting. First, the F*** word was completely overused in this serious. At many points where the cast members were incapable of expressing the desired emotions, they appeared to transparently utilise the curseword as an aid. It's not surprising that Danny (Mendehlson) rarely mentioned the word. Second, the character of Kevin Rayburn, played by Leo Butz, was the most unbearable aspect of the show!
To finish, if you are looking for suspense, action or drama you will be disappointed! Bingeability: 1.5/5 #moviereviews #moviecritix5 #bloodline #netflix #new #tvshow #oscars #drama #thriller #movie
