Pangolins are incredibly unique, gentle, funny, amazing creatures, but tragically they are also the world's most trafficked mammal. Despite this fact, and even more tragic still, not many conservation efforts are being made on their behalf, and many people do not even know they exist. However, there is a sliver of hope thanks to organizations like Tikki Hywood Trust, which is comprised of a group of Zimbabweans who contribute to the care and protection of the world's lesser known endangered animals. Sadly, it is the "cute/pretty" endangered animals (such as pandas) that the vast majority of the public shows concern for. This leaves animals like the delightful pangolin in the dark, with minimal finances to fund conservation efforts and little public outcry for politicians to advocate for their protection. The Tikki Hywood Trust, mainly focuses on rescuing and rehabilitating pangolins. And partially due to the particular difficulty of rehabilitating animals who have not only been kidnapped and abused, but are of a species which is notorious for how highly they value their solitude, the rescuers develop intimate relationships while caring for them. "The pangolins are like their children. And like any parent, they will protect their family from anything that poses a threat" says an ambassador for the group.
Since it is unlikely that you can drop everything to go help rescue individual pangolins, I am sure you are wondering how you can help. Creating awareness of their existence and their plight is one very important way. Another way, which not only helps save pangolins, but ALL endangered species, is to contribute to the protection of their habitats by going vegan and fighting back against the destruction of their homes by both the animal agriculture industry (so as to make space for the raising of farmed animals) as well as climate change.
