Check pascudragos's Instagram When back squats are not enough to satisfy your quads grow hunger, there come those bad boys. 😂😈 Front squats are definetly something neglected by many people because they seem difficult to execute. 😥
Obviously you can not front squat as much weight as you back squat, but this movement is considered to put less pressure on your knees and lower back. Crazy, right? "A 2009 study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning concluded that the front squat was as effective as the back squat in terms of overall muscle recruitment, with significantly less compressive forces and extensor moments" It requires a good back squat technique, so if you can not squat properly, don't underestimate the front squat by ego lifting, you might get injured.  I recently had an injury during a heavy squats day and my core is not fully  recuperated so I try to keep my form as good as possible while improving my front squat as well. 🙂

The picture on the Left is an unrestricted squat where the knee was free to travel forward. The picture on the left had a board preventing forward movement of the knees in a squat

The idea here was to limit ankle dorsiflexion - which is the ability of the tibia (shin bone) to move forward relative to the ankle. Traditionally, we have been told to squat without having the knees cross your toes - but these claims were based on false, prehistoric notions that have somehow maintained relevancy in light of an abundance of research stating the contrary 
As you can see, when the forward movement of the knee was restricted (figure B), there were numerous compensations that had to occur in order to achieve the same squat depth. These include
◾loss of neutral spine - movement inefficiency and increased injury risk ◾forward lean - more strain on the low back
◾knees collapse in (valgus) leading to increased risk of knee injury

When assessing a squat, we are too eager to assess the knees, hips and low back with no attention paid to the joint that grounds us. This loss of dorsiflexion is the very reason weightlifting shoes have a raised heel. Ultimately, this loss of ankle dorsiflexion range of motion will lead to ◾increased injury risk - specifically of the low back and knees
◾decreased movement efficiency and force generation

A very generalized rule to screen your squat is to look at the angle of your shins relative to the angle of your low back - These should be similar
