Check shenovafashion's Instagram ✨🔭Meet today's #STEMSTAR, Hiranya Peiris! Shown here wearing the DNA dress, Professor of Astrophysics at the Dept. of Physics and Astronomy at the University College, London.
Hiranya Peiris is an internationally known researcher who works both in theory and observation. She will further strengthen the successful research activities conducted within the Oskar Klein Centre for cosmological physics (OKC) which includes cosmology, astrophysics and particle physics. She is also the Vice-Chancellor appointed as new Director of the OKC. She is a cosmologist working in both theory and observation. She studies the fossilized heat of the Big Bang, the cosmic microwave background (CMB), to understand the physics that governed the very early universe. She uses large surveys of galaxies to study the subsequent evolution of the universe, with a particular focus on measurements that constrain fundamental physics. She also works at the interface between cosmology and theoretical physics, to refine physical models that explain cosmological observations. The emerging field of astrostatistics, and the development of optimal numerical algorithms capable of handling very large datasets, are common threads that run through much of my work. #aas229#astrophysics #space #spacefashion#science #stem #womeninstem#darkmatter #physics #astronomer#astonomydata #nightsky#constellations #observatory #spaceX#engineering #womeninspace #nasa#astronaut #sdss #astronomy#extragalactic #galaxy #shenovafashion #cosmology #scienceteacher 1454594535891714771_262128772

This image shows two galaxy clusters colliding with the eruption of a supermassive black hole, about 2 billion light years from Earth. It’s the first time two of the most powerful phenomena in the universe have been clearly linked together in the same system.
The result is an extraordinary acceleration of particles, recently discovered by astronomers using data from @nasachandraxray (which our Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory operates for @nasa) and several other telescopes.
This is a composite image: X-rays are blue, radio emission is pink, and optical data is red, green, and blue.#aas229 #universe#astrophysics#astronomy#science#NASA #starstuff#galaxy#Chandra#knowledgeispower #nowyouknow#light#cosmic#massive#blackhole#xenianik1 1440929827100335828_3230050027

Double whammy! Astronomers have discovered what happens when the eruption from a supermassive black hole is swept up by the collision and merger of two galaxy clusters. This composite image contains X-rays, radio emission, and optical data of the colliding galaxy clusters called Abell 3411 and Abell 3412.
