There are 3 different types of . Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) makes up 80-85% of all lung cancer diagnoses. Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) makes up 10-15% and Carcinoid makes up 5% of all diagnosed lung cancers. Carcinoid, which makes up the least amount, is made up of neuroendocrine tumors. SCLC is made of up small cell carcinoma and combined cell carcinoma. Named for how the cells appear under a microscope, small cell carcinoma is often called “oat-cell” cancer. SCLC is often the most severe. NSCLC, the most common, has three types dependent on where the cancer is located on the lungs. Adenocarcinoma (outer lining), squamous cell carcinoma (near bronchus), and large cell carcinoma (any part of the lung). February is National Cancer Prevention Month. Cancer is the second most leading cause of death in the United States, affecting over 500,000 people. It is estimated that 1/3 of all cancers could be prevented, which is perhaps the most striking about asbestos cancers like mesothelioma: it is considered almost wholly preventable.

While lung cancer can occur in both men and women and at any age, a lung cancer diagnosis typically affects older people, with the average age being 70 years old. The risk of developing lung cancer increases with age; two out of three people are 65 years or older when diagnosed, while approximately two percent of lung cancer diagnoses are in individuals younger than 45. According to the @americancancersociety, the chance of men developing lung cancer in a lifetime is 1 in 14; for women, it is 1 in 17. Asbestos mining, manufacturing, and use was most common throughout much of the 20th century, but asbestos use can be traced back thousands of years, when Greek geographers and Roman naturalists noted "perpetual" wicks in sacred lamps, and fabric that became whiter when cast into fire. Asbestos exposure and disease was suspected in the late 1800s and early 1900s, but it wasn't until the 1960s that first asbestos lawsuit was filed. By this point, thousands of asbestos products were in circulation.
