Lemons in the morning. 🍋

“If you’re going to measure your self worth by a number, you might as well do it by how many times you’ve cried yourself laughing, or how many books you’ve closed with a funny warm feeling in your heart. It might as well be counted by the number of people who have been lucky enough to have you in their lives. Your worth could be determined by the number of different places around the world that have had the privilege of being graced by your presence, or how many tiny droplets of rain you’ve seen drip down your window. Or, Darling, maybe it’s something else completely for you…Don’t you see? You get to choose your own worth. It’s all up to you. Whatever it is, just promise me you’ll never let anybody dictate how much you mean to yourself.”

“Remember when you go into the world to keep your eyes and ears wide open. And be kind. Love one another. Take care of each other. Tell the truth. Always do your best. Listen to the big people and the little people. Explore new paths and have fun. Know that you are loved like crazy. Give thanks for all your blessings. Above all else, Love and you will do wonderful things in this world.”

“Don’t settle for nice, for pleasant, for familiar. Keep looking until you find something that really moves you, that resonates with your core. And I mean this for people, for interests, for hobbies, for your possessions, clothes, music, books, art. Everything. Curate every aspect of your life, as much as you can. It’s in the things that deeply inspire us that we find ourselves.”

I wrote a report about the Maldives when I was in elementary school. I had always dreamed about going there, so this moment was pretty surreal for me. Hard work really does pay off. ✨

The art of eye contact.

When I was younger, my father used to tell me stories about Hawaii. I would sit there wide eyed, hanging onto every single word he said. He told me about how my grandmother used to teach hula in town, and my grandfather once worked at the Royal Hawaiian. He told me about their life on the big island, and the sugar cane plantation farm they lived on. My grandparents both passed away before I ever had the chance to get to know them, so these stories were all I had left of them. Throughout my life though, I’ve constantly been told I’m like my grandmother. I used to wonder how I could resemble someone I only knew for the first few years of my life. But I think I’m slowly starting to understand it. She loved the beautiful island she grew up on, and she was devoted to exploring the world. I get to know her a little more every time I walk through an airport, or step into a new place, or I’m back in Hawaii. Just like there are pieces of her memory in my father’s stories, they’re also out there in the world and in myself. I hope I never stop finding them.

Do you ever look around at the big crowds of people around you and realize everyone has a story and memories and family and troubles and achievements and a first kiss and a broken heart but you’ll never know any of it and every human life is really intricate and expansive but oh they’ve walked into a shop and you’ll never see them again and you’ll never know just what they were thinking.
