"The Milky Way over the Madison River," Yellowstone National Park
The Milky Way Core rises high into the sky above the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park
I've always loved Yellowstone, and this night down by the Madison River was no exception. It was very calm and relaxing. Yellowstone has some very dark skies and the clouds move quickly, so it was quite nice watching things unfold in the sky over the course of the night. As always when I'm in Yellowstone, I had my bear spray just in case. I've seen Grizzlies, Bison, Deer, Elk and Coyotes while out shooting at night there, and heard wolves. I illuminated this scene with a Fenix UC40E led flashlight set to low output, cut off about halfway through the exposure. The technique I used to ensure even illumination is very similar to painting a car. Everything balanced out nicely against the backdrop of the night sky. I wanted to capture the impression you were right there, floating on the water starring out at the night sky. Mission accomplished.
Shot details: Canon 5DMKIII + battery grip at 6400ISO, Canon 16-35 f2.8 L II at16mm f2.8, Canon remote release, Gitzo Carbon Fiber Tripod, Manfrotto 3 way pan and tilt head, Kirk L bracket, acra mount, adapter, and Long Rail, Hoya UV Filter to protect the glass. 37 second exposure.
